《指揮官：征服美洲》結合了交易和策略遊戲的元素，需要玩家扮演一支歐洲軍隊的指揮官，前去征服新大陸。玩家要從歐洲7個不同的派系中選擇，負責建立新的殖民地，並管理殖民地的資源、生產、軍事以及各種能讓他們發展成一個完整帝國的東西。玩家可以在RTS操作風格下控制船隻，或者直接控制艦隊與敵國和嗜血的海盜交戰，這些都將會在高度細節化的戰術層面上進行。
