The winner e-mailed me with an unusual request: Her boyfriend was going from LA to San Diego that weekend,

The man called,
Christian Louboutin and did not sound like an axe murderer. So we arranged to meet after my tennis game Saturday morning. Turned out the guy who showed up worked for the boyfriend, who owned a bug-exterminating company. He was dressed neatly in blue Dickies and a striped shirt that said his name was Josh or Jared or somesuch. I took his stack of fresh bills and counted them slowly. Not wanting this to seem so much like an illicit drug deal, I pulled one pump from its protective dust bag and chortled, “See! There’s that tiny nick on the toe—I mentioned that in the auction—but they’re really in near-new condition!”
He gave me a look that suggested he’d rather personally bite the head off all his cockroach conquests than continue this chat.
“I really,” he mumbled, “don’t understand how anyone could pay more than fifty bucks for shoes.”
I was going to tell Mr. Bug Czar that JoeJosh needed a raise ASAP, but I doubt the extra dough would have gone to fund a makeover.
I don’t endorse feminine waste, as when
Chanel Shoes Carrie in “Sex and the City” lamented that buying shoes was keeping her from buying a house. Shoe-worship, when it leads to credit card debt and unopened boxes with price tags still on them, is sad and calls for deprogramming.
But not with shoes that cost $50. I’d rather that we learn to use our money wisely, saving up for something great, than subject ourselves to a bread-and-water regime of sub-par footwear.
The shoes I just bought started life at a chic 2nd Street boutique. Then, one Friday, my pal/partner in shopping crime whispered, “Today’s the pre-sale! Invite only!”
